When I first told my parents I was starting my own digital marketing company, they were shocked beyond words. A teacher to a writer to a salesman? That was like an unforgivable crime to them. I had absolutely no clue how I would explain to them that marketing and sales were not identical. The fact that sales requires great talent in itself (a talent that I absolutely can’t lay claim to) was a fact that had to be left out of the picture. Gone are the days when sales and marketing were thought to be the same. Gone are the days when people used to go door-to-door, selling a product they didn’t believe in, only to get the door slammed on their faces. Today both sales and marketing have undergone revolutionary changes requiring their own specific skill sets. As a writer (and a painter and photographer) I believe marketing has the greatest potential to reach out to the world, not for the end goal of selling but more for the purpose of giving. I am not patronizing my profession, no. But, at the end of the day, I’ve got to admit, successful marketing gives you a sense of satisfaction and empowerment like never before.
As I dabble in this complex profession, I am always on the lookout for motivation. Quotes are my favorite source of such inspiration. There are many, and I mean MANY such quotes that make you fall in love with marketing. Some tell you the hard facts that most often than not make you want to quit, there are others that challenge you and there are those that help you look at the brighter side of things. Of these MANY (forgive me for repeating) I decided to pick out my top 10 marketing quotes that bowled me over.
